Share Your Money Saving Tips

*
I figured in this economy it would be nice for people to share their tried and true things for saving some money, things that help in every day living expenses.

We have heard about how to drive our car to save, how not using your air conditioner so much, coupons and so on to save you money, but I am talking about other things.

Like maybe you found a cleaner at the dollar store for a buck that works just as good as one for $6.00 or how to cut some corners with cooking, laundry or even what works and makes your job a bit easier the list is endless and I would like to hear from you what you have discovered.

Things that you have tried and indeed they work wonderful or good at the very least. I say tried and true, because I have found that cheaper is not always better with some things and when you are thinking you are saving money you really aren't at all.

I will keep this post up to date and please come by periodically and check comments to see what people are saying. I will also have somethings as well I will post under comments.

Glad to see you're back on the web! Well, you asked for it, so here goes!(I'll save you the lifelong lesson version and cut to a few very recently used things):

As an ex-office cleaner who's tried lots of cleaners: Just dilute Greased Lightning to 50/50 and it'll still do the job just as well.

Collect rainwater to water plants when it's not raining, or for outdoor clean-up projects.

Want to re-use your bath towel but don't want anyone else touching it? I wrote our names on clothes pins and we pin them to our towels hanging in the bathroom.

I saved frozen pizza cardboard circles and used them as cake bases for a couple of round birthday cakes. When the cake is gone I'll use some marker to draw a bullseye for the kids to shoot their airsoft b.b.'s. When it's shot up it'll be a starter for the charcoal grill.

Ok, enough for now. Enjoy! (or call the people with the long sleeved white coat with the buckles in the back because I'm looney tunes!) ; )

LOL I always knew you were crazy and now it is confirmed, just kidding!!!
Those are actually great tips and very appreciated. I think it would be great and I hope that people will just keep dropping by and adding what they discover. A lot of heads are better than one and sometimes there are certain things you just normally would think of or try.

P.S. It feels good to be back and thank you very much.

Here are some more tips:

Join Freecycle. It's a Yahoo group and everything posted is FREE! I've gotten some very nice things from there.

Use Kraftfoods.com to find recipes with what you already have in your pantry. You can tell the site what you have on hand and it will provide matching recipes. I tried a new one recently and it was excellent!

Keep powdered milk on hand. (I know, yuck!) But this is for when you're out so you don't have to make a special trip to the store when using recipes that call for milk. I have used it in mac and cheese, green bean casserole and some prepared pastas like Lipton noodles and nobody knew the difference!

Make your own baby food and wet wipes. My twins never had a single jar of store-bought baby food. I used the blender to puree what we were having. I cut paper towels in half, put in a round Rubbermaid bowl, added some baby soap and a cap of alcohol with just enough water to wet the roll and removed the cardboard core. Voila! Tear-off wet wipes!

Switch to cigars if you can handle it. My mom switched from $35/carton 305's (a FL cigarette) to Remington cigars at $11/carton.

That's it for today. Hope you enjoy.
