Parents This Program Needs Attention

*
Being a first time parent it amazes me how fast toddlers and children pick things up. In a lot of cases it's not always what you want them to.

The song be careful little ears what you hear, be careful little eyes what you see, so true!

My son is not a huge T.V. fan at 2 1/2 years old and I think that is a good thing! However he does have a few programs he likes to watch. I have monitored most of them, but when he sits down and wants to watch them, mommy (me) usually uses that time to do dishes, put away clothes, bills, oh yeah, or post on my site :) whatever needs to be done.

So one day I am on the phone with my mom and he grabs his daddy's cell phone, I told him give it back to mommy, as I reached for it. He than says "your to late" and runs with the cell saying "ha, ha ,ha" Now I have never heard him say this before and kinda laughed it off, WRONG!!!

So as the days that followed so did this saying out of my sons mouth, along with him running with our things, or throwing something or stuff missing and finding them later. The saying was usually "Your to late, you'll never find it now" sometimes there was a ha, ha, ha, at the end and sometimes not.

The other day I was at the kitchen table when I heard the exact same saying and it was not coming from my sons mouth, it was from the television, what? I immediately began watching the program and you will never believe what it was!!!

Dora The Explorer on Nick Jr, yep they have this little fox and his mission is to swipe things or try to from Dora and Boots. Now here is the really good part, his name is Swiper and when he succeeds getting things he runs with them or throws them and says "Your to late, you'll never find it now, ha, ha, ha"

Now Swiper is not on every episode and that is how I must of missed it, but he is on there enough!

I had always liked Dora The Explorer and their teachings are good, but besides Nick Jr teaching our children exploring, bi lingual words and so on, are they teaching our children to be Kleptomaniac's????????

I'm glad you decided to post this. Parents do need to know, if they don't already. Readers: I was on the phone with Laurie and heard Logan say this with my own ears. Now, I'm not trying to tell Laurie or anyone else how to raise their kids here. But it is true that at 2 1/2 years old children are 100% sponges. If the parents do not educate the child that stealing and keeping possessions from others and taunting them about it is a bad thing and why...well you've gone and gotten yourself a bonafide bully on your hands before the thought of school ever entered your brain! Think about it. If parents don't guide and correct and teach their kids about things such as this for example, the kid grows up thinking there's nothing wrong with it and it's just part of life. Laurie, I think you should contact Nickelodeon, I do. Just Google the terms "blog Dora Swiper" (as three words together). I did, there are several bloggers writing about this very thing AND even Wikipedia has a detailed description of Swiper, his character, actions and intentions. I know, to some I sound paranoid. But I can say "been there done that" with my kids.

Lakelandmom, I know it does kinda stink, because Logan started saying it more and more. I know they might be trying to teach children it is wrong to steal,by saying "Swiper, don't swipe", but I don't think anyone stopped to realize the age group they are targeting are not going to get that, just the bad part.
In this day in age that's all we need is to worry about more stuff our young ones are learning that is not good.

Interesting. This has never been an issue in our house. We have two daughters, four and two, that watch Dora regularly enough I guess. The times we have seen swiper we take the opportunity to point out how silly and ill mannered he is. The girls seem to get it.

Good luck with this.

Chuck that's it! you answered my question it is a boy thing. lol Just Playing!
Well I don't know maybe it is boy thing.
I agree, I am trying to explain to him that what Swiper does is not a good thing and Dora and Boots try to stop him.
I just am surprised that Nick Jr. wasn't a little more careful, I mean Go Diego Go doesn't have a swiper in it. :)

Hi,

I am so glad you are among the parents who is very conscious on what kids see on tv, as many parents don't.

There are other tv shows that seem to be for kids but are really not.

I agree with with lakelandmom that you should inform Nickelodeon. Who knows? There might be others who raised the same issue and you will be a great add.

Thanks.

Guardian Angel,
You and Lakelandmom are probably right and I should get off my hiney and see what I can do, just to see what comes of it anyway.
I can't imagine I am the only parent who's child is swiping, because of Swiper. :)
Will keep you all posted on this.
