In Galveston Texas there was a family that had decided to ride out the storm and not evacuate. When Ike was making land fall they soon realized the error of their ways.
This family of four, dad, mom and two children decided to get into their boat, because of the ocean surge and get down the streets to one of hotels that is on a 50 ft hill. Which is also where one of the national weather reporters is staying.
They made it and when they did, the people their noticed the writing on the inside of their arms, when asked about it the parents said: It is each of our names and social security numbers.
A. "Because if any of us got separated."
B. "Because we were not certain that we would make it to safety with our lives."
It is an on going search and rescue and people are being rescued from their roof tops.
Millions of people without power, just in the Houston Texas area, that is not including other areas and states that have been effected and are being effected now.
Thousands of homes flooded in coastal Louisiana.
If you have loved ones down in these areas that Ike has hit, once again here is Red Cross link, you can search for your loved ones by name and if they have a way to get to a Red Cross worker they can post to the website that they are ok. Click here http://disastersafe.redcross.org/

that's a smart thing to do but it could've been smarter if they chose to evacuate the minute they were warned. it puzzles how stubborn people can sometimes get.
I have never quite understood that myself. Especially when kids are involved. I know if you don't have a safe place to go shelters suck, but it could mean the difference of your life or your children lives.
My employer's corporate office is in Houston. When they informed our office that they were closing on Friday, the President stated: "Looks like we're finally going to get a taste of what you all experience on a regular basis". This statement made me think that they really didn't know what they were in for, despite the warnings by local and federal officials. I guess it's just one of those things where you really have to experience it to know what it's really all about. I would be interested in finding out how many of the 'stubborn' had ever been in the main landfall area of a strong hurricane before? If they have experienced it before, then I have less pity. Not to say I don't care about them. They are God's children too, I just think they could have made the decision to get out. Laurie, you are right. I was stuck in St. Pete, FL when Charlie was supposed to hit us head-on. I had no money and no gas. My family couldn't understand how I could stay there. But, I really had no possible way out. Luckily, Charlie did not hit St. Pete, but instead ravaged the exact place I would have run to if I could have. Go figure.
Yes Lakelandmom the exact place it ravaged was where I lived!! lol
Here we were so concerned about you and telling not to worry about the gas money, yeah right, but neither one of us could get to each other to help.
That was very ironic that year for sure.
Great idea about the names but leave off the social numbers someone else may use it, to many criminals out there. About evacuating is the same old problem, the government allows these gas station owners to raise up prices when they expect disasters.
It just goes to show you can lead a horse to to water but you can not make it drink. I feel for the people of Texas.
Thanks for visiting and commenting.
Have a great day.

@ Jazer, I hear ya!!!
@ Fish Whisperer, very well put. I know it is very sad and awful for these people.
You are very welcome and ditto.
If you want to be stupid and wait till the last minute that's your business, but when you have kids get the he.. out way before the storm hits.
Glenn you are so right!! I have never understood how parents with their children could stay in their homes with such a potential destructive storm coming.
I realize shelters are not the ideal place, but if you don't have the gas or time to get completely out of the storms path, they are the place to go.
I think a little discomfort is worth knowing my family will be safe.
